Sensor as a Service

The use of sensors enables the addition of services to existing physical offers or the creation of entirely new independent services. The key source of revenue is not the sensor itself, but the analysis of the data generated by the sensor. Possibilities for real-time information can bolster the value case even further.

When and how to apply Sensor as a Service:

Constantly new application opportunities are spawned by the rapid advancement of digitalisation. This unquestionably includes the "Sensor-as-a-Service" business model, which involves the evaluation and utilization of smart sensor data that has been specifically recorded. The informational content of the data enables service providers, for instance, to provide certain services at the right time and place, and thus in an especially cost-effective manner. (1) communication-capable, specific (smart) sensors; (2) a secure and cost-effective transport of the generated data to the internet or a cloud; (3) an application-specific evaluation and presentation of the data content in the cloud; and (4) the automatic initiation or execution of specific services based on the determined information.

Well-known companies that use this pattern are B8ta and Somfy.
